What is a Sexologist?

Updated: Sep 5, 2021

Sexologists are professionals and educators that are specialised in understanding human

sexuality, sexual functioning and sexual behaviour, typically utilising methods used within

psychology and counselling to assist their clients.

Certified post-graduate sexologists have several years of sexological education, which covers topics such as, but not limited to; sexual function and dysfunction, gender diversity, socio-cultural aspects of sex and sexual development.

Depending on the level of education, some sexologists may be able to assist in a variety of

sexological related issues that may be presented by a client, such as sexual trauma, sexual

desire discrepancies between a couple, individuals who abstain from penetrative intercourse due to pain even when biological causes are ruled out and even assisting people from diverse socio-cultural backgrounds and gender identities.

A standard practice that is utilised by sexologists in assisting their clients is understanding their sexual history. This assists the sexologist in understanding from a more holistic perspective the source of the sexual issue by investigating the client’s sexual experiences and sexuality through a biological, psychological and social perspective.

Sexologists often work closely with other medical professionals in the health industry, as physical exams may be required of a client before proceeding with treatment. However, this is dependent on the circumstances of the potential client and the level of training of the sexologist.
